SULPHURIC ACID, diluted

Diluted sulphuric acid H2SO4 This substance is obtained by dehydration of moist chlorine or hydrogen chloride with the help of contact sulphuric acid. The sulphuric acid has concentration of 74 %.

PROPERTIES
Diluted sulphuric acid is a slightly turbid, viscous liquid of yellow to brown colour. It is an oily liquid, with a slight odour of chlorine traces. It is hygroscopic with strong acid reaction, having etching effects.

TECHNICAL DATA:
content H2SO4, min. vol. % 74
Density at 20 °C, min. g.cm-3 1,6573
Active chlorine (Cl2), max. vol. % 0,07
Iron (Fe), max. vol. % 0,07

APPLICATION
It is used as a raw material in the chemical industry.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND HEALTH PROTECTION
Sulphuric acid is a caustic which is harmful to health, causing serious burns. Technical arrangements must secure that direct contact with the substance is eliminated. Upon manipulation and work, precise regulations concerning safety precautions and health protection must be observed. Provide for ventilation and/or exhaustion within the manipulation area. Employees are to be equipped with protective mask or breathing apparatus, protective shields or goggles, rubber gloves, possibly with rubber-coated aprons. In case of accidents, medical help must be sought immediately.

PACKING, TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE
Diluted sulphuric acid is supplied in iron tanks which must carry a label: ATTENTION! CAUSTICS! DANGEROUS TO HEALTH! It is stored in covered dry places in lead lined containers. Each storage unit must be tagged according to Act No. 163/2001, RID and ADR regulations. Train and road transport shall be executed according to requirements for the transport of dangerous goods in terms of valid legislative provisions. Store in indoor dry storage area in covered acid resistant containers protected from freezing and higher temperatures. Do not store with hydroxides!

The presented instructions are to be considered as general and may be modified with regard to local conditions.
